Introduction: Depression is a prevalent mental disorder that disables biology, work, and family; more so when the person has a chronic degenerative disease. Objective: To determine depression in type 2 diabetic patients hospitalized in a level III hospital. Methodology: A quantitative, observational, prospective, correlational cross-sectional study was carried out, voluntarily evaluating 64 hospitalized type 2 diabetics, applying the Beck Depression inventory. Procedure: The interview technique and the application of the Beck Depression Inventory instrument were used. Results: 57.8% did not have controlled diabetes, 45.3% with some late manifestation, mainly neuropathy and diabetic foot; 29.7% with insulin therapy, and 79.7% without psychological care 48.4% had some degree of depression, with mild depression (61.3%) followed by moderate depression (32.3%). Type 2 diabetics in women (p = 0.013), with insulin therapy (p = 0.010), uncontrolled diabetes (p = 0.039), with late onset (p = 0.047), diabetic foot (p = 0.039) and those awaiting surgical amputation (p = 0.010) were significantly associated with the presence of depression. Conclusions: Type 2 diabetic patients frequently present some degree of depression, which is associated with the female sex, uncontrolled diabetes, presence of late manifestations such as diabetic foot and waiting for amputation.
